Modern homes are built tighter than ever, saving energy but requiring attention to ventilation. Proper ventilation prevents condensation, removes cooking odors, reduces indoor pollutants, and helps maintain healthy indoor air quality.

Daily Habits for Good Ventilation

Simple daily habits keep your home properly ventilated:

  • Run hood fan when cooking - Removes moisture and odors
  • Run bath fans during and after bathroom use - Removes moisture (run 15 to 20 minutes after showering)
  • Open windows when weather permits - Fresh air circulation
  • Never block fresh air supply to furnace - Safety critical
  • Keep dryer vent clean and connected - Prevents moisture buildup and fire hazard

Mechanical Ventilation System

Your home's mechanical ventilation system should be:

  • Set to operate a minimum of 15 minutes per hour
  • Used to balance temperature variations throughout the home
  • Providing fresh air from outside to all registers

Proper ventilation prevents excessive moisture from forming on windows.

Exhaust Fan Care

Cleaning Exhaust Fans

  2. Remove cover (usually clips or screws)
  3. Wash cover in warm soapy water
  4. Vacuum fan blades carefully
  5. Wipe housing with damp cloth
  6. Allow to dry completely
  7. Reinstall cover

Clean fans run more efficiently and quietly.

Attic Ventilation

Your attic is ventilated through:

  • Soffit vents - Underside of roof overhangs
  • Gable end vents - In gable walls
  • Ridge vents - Along roof peak

Do not cover or block attic vents. During driving rain or snow, some moisture may enter through these vents. This is normal. Proper attic ventilation is essential for:

Bath Fan Dripping Water

During extreme cold, condensation can form inside bath exhaust fan venting and drip into the bathroom.

This is normal during very cold weather because of temperature differential between warm moist air and cold vent pipe.

To minimize:

  • Run fan during and for several minutes after bathing
  • Ensure vent damper operates properly
  • Keep bathroom door open slightly during use
