Your home's electrical system is designed for safety and convenience. Understanding how it works helps you troubleshoot common issues and maintain electrical safety.
How It Works
Main Panel & Breakers
Your main electrical box includes:
- Main shut-off - Controls all power to home
- Individual breakers - Control separate circuits
- Labels - Identify which breaker serves which area
Know where this is located before you need it!
Breaker Positions
Breakers have three positions:
- ON - Normal operation
- OFF - Manually turned off
- TRIPPED - Automatically shut off due to overload
To reset a tripped breaker: Must turn to OFF first, then to ON. Going directly from TRIPPED to ON won't work.
GFCI Outlets
GFCI outlets have TEST and RESET buttons. They protect you from electrical shock in wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors, basements, and garages.
How they work: Sense power fluctuations and trip instantly to protect you.
One GFCI can protect multiple outlets - A tripped GFCI in one location may affect outlets elsewhere.
Routine Maintenance

Testing GFCI Outlets
- Press TEST button - outlet should lose power
- Press RESET button - power should return
- If it doesn't work properly, contact an electrician
Testing Smoke/CO Detectors
- Press TEST button
- Alarm should sound
- If not, replace battery and retest
- If still not working, replace detector
Chirping sound: Battery needs replacement (usually 9-volt)
Cleaning: Periodically blow out dust with compressed air to prevent false alarms
Troubleshooting
No Power Anywhere in Home
- Check for area outage - Contact utility company first
- Check main breaker - Must be in ON position
- Check individual breakers - All should be ON
- Check outdoor meter disconnect - Must be in proper position
No Power to One or More Outlets
- Check breaker - Look for tripped breaker (middle position)
- To reset: Turn fully OFF first, then back ON
- Check wall switch - Some outlets are switch-controlled
- Check GFCI - Press RESET button on GFCI outlets
- Test the device - Try it in another outlet to confirm it works
- Check light bulbs - Replace if burned out
Breaker Keeps Tripping
- Unplug everything on that circuit
- Reset breaker
- If it trips with nothing connected → call electrician
- If it stays on → one of your devices is defective
Common causes:
- Too many devices on one circuit (overload)
- Worn cord or defective appliance
- Appliance exceeds circuit capacity
- Electric motor starting
- Short circuit
What to Avoid
- Never remove the ground wire - Your home has a three-wire grounded electrical system. Never remove the bare ground wire.
- Don't overload circuits - Distribute high-draw appliances across different circuits
- Don't ignore tripping breakers - Repeated tripping indicates a problem
- Don't disable smoke/CO detectors - They're required for safety
- Don't dig without calling 811 - Underground cables can be dangerous and expensive to repair
Heavy Appliances on GFCI
Refrigerators, freezers, and power tools may trip GFCI outlets. Classic Homes is not responsible for food spoilage from appliances on GFCI circuits. Consider adding an alarm to notify you of power loss.
Power Surges
A whole-house surge protector is installed per code. However:
- Power surges from lightning or utility issues can damage electronics
- Use additional surge protectors on sensitive equipment (TVs, computers)
- Periodically check the breaker panel surge protector is functional
Safety Tips
- Keep a flashlight handy for power outages
- Know where your main breaker is located
- Label circuit breakers if not already labeled
- Never use water on an electrical fire
- Install tamper-resistant outlets where children are present
