Insulation

Your home's insulation helps maintain comfortable temperatures and reduce energy costs. While insulation requires minimal maintenance, understanding how it works helps you preserve its effectiveness.

How It Works

Insulation resists heat flow, keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Different areas of your home have different insulation types and amounts:

  • Attic - Typically blown-in insulation
  • Walls - Batt or blown-in insulation
  • Floors - Insulation over unheated spaces

Insulation effectiveness is measured by R-value - resistance to heat flow. Higher R-values mean better insulating performance. Your home's insulation meets or exceeds building codes at the time of construction.

Attic Insulation Care

The effectiveness of blown insulation depends on it being smooth and even.

After any attic work:

  • Running cable/network lines
  • HVAC inspection

Natural Settling

Attic insulation will settle over time. This is:

  • Normal and expected
  • Accounted for in the original installation amount
  • Not a defect

The insulation installed exceeds what's needed after settling to ensure ongoing performance.

Troubleshooting

Drafts or Cold Spots

Before calling for service:

  1. Check if insulation was disturbed - After attic work, speaker installation, etc.
  2. Feel around electrical outlets - Some cold air from exterior wall outlets is normal
  3. Check weatherstripping - On doors and windows
  4. Ensure vents are open - And unobstructed

Cold Air from Outlets

Electrical outlets on exterior walls may emit cold air when outside temperatures are low.

Why this happens:

  • Air convection occurs naturally in wall cavities
  • Cold exterior air creates temperature differential
  • Air movement is felt at outlet openings

This is normal and not a sign of missing or inadequate insulation.

To reduce drafts:

  • Install foam gaskets behind outlet covers (available at hardware stores)
  • Use child safety plugs in unused outlets

Uneven Room Temperatures

If some rooms feel colder than others:

  1. Check that vents are open
  2. Check that return air is unobstructed
  3. Verify attic insulation is even (if accessible)
  4. Consider running furnace fan continuously

What to Avoid

  • Don't compress insulation - Reduces effectiveness significantly
  • Don't move insulation without replacing it - Must remain even
  • Don't step on ceiling drywall - Injury and damage risk
  • Don't block soffit vents - Attic needs ventilation
  • Don't store items directly on insulation - Compresses and reduces R-value
