Gutters & Downspouts

Your gutters and downspouts protect your home by directing roof water away from the foundation. Regular cleaning and maintenance prevent water damage, foundation issues, and ice buildup.

How It Works

Gutters collect rainwater and snowmelt from your roof and channel it to downspouts. Downspouts carry water to the ground level, where extensions or splash blocks direct it away from your foundation.

Key components:

  • Gutters - Horizontal channels along roof edges
  • Downspouts - Vertical pipes carrying water down
  • Extensions - Direct water away from foundation
  • Splash blocks - Prevent erosion at discharge points

Gutter Cleaning (Critical!)

Check gutters periodically and clean as needed. Debris in gutters causes:

  • Slow water drainage from roof
  • Overflow onto siding and foundation

Recommended cleaning schedule:

  • Spring (after tree debris)
  • Fall (after leaves drop)
  • After major storms

Extensions and Splash Blocks

Downspout extensions and splash blocks are essential for directing water away from your foundation.

Important:

  • Keep extensions in the down position at all times
  • Position splash blocks so water flows away from home
  • Extensions should discharge outside of rock or bark beds
  • Don't let landscape edging dam water behind it

Snow and Ice Management

Ice buildup can develop during extended cold periods as snow melts off the roof.

What can happen:

  • Ice forms in gutters and downspouts
  • Overflow creates ice on walkways below
  • Gutters can be damaged by heavy ice

You are responsible for removing ice that accumulates in gutters and downspouts, and on walkways from gutter overflow.

Troubleshooting

Gutters Overflowing

  1. Check for clogs - Remove debris from gutters
  2. Check downspouts - Ensure not blocked
  3. Check slope - Water should flow toward downspouts
  4. Note conditions - Overflow during excessive rain is normal

Water Not Reaching Downspouts

  1. Check for debris - Clear the gutter path
  2. Check slope - Gutters over 3 feet should slope toward downspouts
  3. Check for sags - May indicate loose brackets

Leaks at Joints

  1. Identify location - Mark where leak occurs
  2. Check seal - Joint may need resealing

Standing Water in Gutters

Small amounts (up to 1 inch) standing briefly after rain is normal. Persistent standing water indicates:

  • Improper slope
  • Clogged outlet
  • Damaged gutter section

What to Avoid

  • Don't ignore debris buildup - Leads to overflow and damage
  • Don't remove extensions - Essential for foundation protection
  • Don't position splash blocks incorrectly - Water must flow away from house
  • Don't let ice accumulate - Can damage gutters and create hazards
  • Don't walk on roof to access gutters - Use proper ladder safety

Checking Gutter Slope

Gutters over 3 feet long should have a slight slope toward downspouts. Signs of improper slope:

  • Water pools in certain sections
  • One area always has standing water
  • Water doesn't reach the downspout
